Drinking Bird Flow Meter

The nuclear industry was
faced with a problem.
They needed a leak meter
to measure as little as
a few drops per hour to
several gallons per minute
of primary coolant leakage.
No existing flow meters could
do it.
It also had to work in the
harse environment of a nuclear
containment building.
Poppa invented the drinking
bird flow meter.
When the bucket fills up
it dumps.
Counting the time between
dumps provides flow rate.
MEC flow meters were put
in many of the nations
nuclear power plants.
