Mechanical Equipment Company

Poppa retired from B&W
to start his own company
in the 1970s
Mechanical Equipment Co.
made one of kind machinery
mostly for the nuclear
industry.
This is a picture of some
of those machines being
assembled at Duke Power
Company in South Carolina.
The machine in the foreground
is the upender. It was used
to turn a nuclear cooling pump
upside down for maintainance.
On top of the upender is the
resurfacing machine, used for
machining the gasket surfaces
of a reactor cooling pump.
My brother Jock and Poppa
designed the machinery and
a small crew built it in
MEC machine shop in Rustburg VA.
Poppa is in the white hat
and long time family friend
and employee Paul Hayden is
in the yello hard hat.
