This was a major departure from the plans.
I purchased the composite 601XL gear from Aircraft Spruce.
To my surprise this gear was totally different from that of the plans.
Deciding to go ahead with using may yet prove to be a mistake.
I had to redesign the gear channel to beef it up so that a 2 part
gear could be installed.
My solution was to make a double channel with a space of about 1/2 inch
in between the 2 parts. This was beefed up more where the legs bolt
on. Where the channel would normally be opened on the bottom is boxed
in with a final peice, making it all into a double box section. One
requirement I imposed on the design is that it had to be easy to convert
to the original gear.
