I had no material around the shop to make a strong rivet driver out of, so I did a google search for methods of hardening mild steel not really expecting to find anything.
I found one artical about Gunters Quench, invented by Robby Gunter that was one of those sounds too good to be true stories.
According to the artical you could heat treat and harden mild steel to rockwell 45->50 using common household materials found in the kitchen.
I didn't have anything to loose, so I mixed up the stuff, heated my carriage bolt based rivet driver to a cherry red and dumped in the quenching solution.
It worked great! I was able to use my now hardened jack screw to remove all the large rivets. I then made another one to remove the small rivets, also hardened using the quench.
The materials are dishwashing soap, jet dry, and salt. For more info, just google it.
